How to Hang a Planter with a Chain

Hanging baskets allow for maximizing space in small garden spaces and adding splashes of color in unexpected places. A simple hook allows for mini-gardens to sprout on porches, balconies and other places gardens could not be kept otherwise. Use a hanging basket to brighten views from windows -- or to provide a little privacy. Herbs and veggies can thrive within handy reach from a sunny kitchen door location. You can even stretch your space more by using chains suspended from hooks to stagger the length of multiple containers.

Instructions

    • 1
Hanging baskets provide new opportunities for color and texture in your landscape.

Attach your planter hooks as instructed per the packaging to a sturdy location with the correct sun availability for the plant you wish to hang. Generally, planter hooks require drilling a hole into the wood or stone base and using anchors for support to hold the weight of the wet planter.

    • 2

Measure the length of chain you wish to use to position your plant. Chain may be used to make a planter more accessible or to stagger the lengths of different sizes, among other reasons.

    • 3

Cut the chain to length, if applicable, using a heavy wire cutter. Chain can be purchased and cut to length at the hardware store.

    • 4

Hang the chain on the planter hook from a couple of links from the end. Do not hang from any links that have been cut when purchased or shortened. The weight of the plant could pull the link apart, dropping and damaging your plant.

Hang your planter's hook on the bottom of the chain. Care for the plant as normal.
