How to Fix a Small Patio Garden

Creating a small patio garden can be a rewarding experience when you use your imagination. Utilizing small areas to fix a tasty salad garden or a pleasant floral array is an excellent way to brighten up an area. Patio gardens are often limited to containers, since space is at such a premium, but it is sometimes possible to plant items along the edges of the patio to expand the space.

Instructions

    • 1

Designate the areas where planting will occur and mark this space with a border. Bricks, large rocks or small border fences work well for this purpose. Having a specific area to locate your plants ensures that the area will remain attractive and uncluttered.

    • 2

Plant tall, fragrant herbs along the border of your small patio, such as eucalyptus "silver dollar," taller varieties of basil, rosemary and thyme. Each of these plants offers vibrant greenery as well as lovely flowers and scents.

    • 3

Utilize large containers for arrangements of golden lemon balm, lemon verbena, chives and mint. Planting these smaller varieties in pots allows you to control the amount of water they receive and restrict their growing area. Prune small bits from the plants to use in salads or cooking and remove flowers past their prime.

    • 4

Intersperse miniature rosebushes along the border of your small patio garden for dashes of vibrant color. Taller varieties of roses can be planted, but it is important to choose those that will not outgrow the available area. If you don't have space along the border of your patio, small roses can be grown in containers.

Add a comfortable chair to your small patio garden. Spend time in your garden, basking in the scents and colors it provides. Outdoor air has been proven to be beneficial and spending time on your patio, whether for relaxation or maintenance of your garden, can be good for your health.

Keep a small set of gardening tools in a hidden location on your patio. Use a bucket, basket or small box to hold a trowel, root rake and shears. Pruning and weeding can be done on a minuscule basis, doing only a few minutes of work at a time if the tools are kept nearby. This eliminates the need for long afternoons spent toiling in the sun.
