Novel Garden Edging Materials

Edging materials are not restricted to pressure-treated lumber and concrete block. Natural stone, wood rounds, chunks of recycled pavement and even wine bottles can all make unusual and attractive edging.
  1. Natural Stone

    • Natural stone can be obtained from one's own property or that of a friend. Round rocks can be mortared together for added stability. Rough pieces of stone can be stacked securely enough to walk on without the use of mortar.

    Wood Rounds

    • Wood rounds of varying sizes make edging that is easily available and durable. Larger rounds tend to last longer, although splitting can be a problem. Choose durable and rot-resistant woods such as black locust, cedar or fir. Weed barrier and a light coating of gravel around this type of edging prevents string trimmer damage.

    Recycled Concrete

    • Construction and remodeling sites will often have piles of broken concrete. These pieces make natural-looking edging for garden beds. Very large chunks can be used as corner pieces or broken up into smaller sizes. The recycled concrete edging will eventually weather and collect moss, allowing it to blend further into the landscape.

    Wine Bottles

    • Wine bottles, with their thick glass and glowing color, make a highly novel garden edging material. Bottles can be obtained from friends or recycling centers. Bury them neck down, and apply a weed barrier with a light coating of gravel. Weeds can be a problem without it; string trimmers and glass bottles do not mix.
