How to Mark Plants

Keep track of the plants you have in your flower or vegetable garden. Although it's wise to make an overall chart, label each row of plants with a small sign too. Marking labels or stakes to identify plants isn't difficult; it just takes a little time and a few supplies. Commercial garden stakes come in a variety of styles and materials, such as plastic and metal, but ice cream sticks or large tongue depressors also work.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the plant name on the seed packet or plant packaging. You may want the common or scientific name of the plant, depending on how serious of a gardener you are.

    • 2

Write the name of each plant on a garden stake. Use traditional number-2 lead pencils to reuse stakes from year to year. Use permanent markers to see plants from farther away.

    • 3

Push the garden stake in the ground as you plant, ensuring you place each stake next to the correct plant.

    • 4

Remove stakes from the ground at the end of the season. Remove markings from plastic or metal markers with warm soapy water, or lime-based bathroom cleaner. Order more labels from the company if needed, or remark the labels for next year's planting.
