How to Care for Plastic Tub-Lined Ponds

Installing a tub-lined pond is a convenient method of including a small pond to your lawn or garden. Quick and easy to install, a plastic pond still needs regular care so the water's environment supports the growth of water-borne plants and animals. This care ranges from daily maintenance to yearly cleaning, all equally important if you wish to keep the water healthy and sparkling.

Instructions

    • 1

Maintain consistent water levels throughout the pool by replacing any water lost daily. Remove and replace about 20 percent of the water every month to keep the water from growing stagnant. Use a bucket to bail out excess water and fill the tub with fresh water from a garden hose.

    • 2

Change the water in the tub once a year after the winter season. Remove any plants from the tub, placing the plant roots in buckets of water to avoid damage during cleaning. Catch any small animals in your tub with a net and place them into a bucket of water.

    • 3

Bail out the water in the tub until you reach the bottom, then tilt the tub at an angle to remove any remaining water. Refill the tub with water and add dechlorinator according to instructions on the packaging.

    • 4

Place any necessary additives such as pond salt or bacteria preparations into the tub after refilling. Aerate the water with an air pump.

    • 5

Replace the animals and plants back into the tub.
