How to Decorate Your Tiered Water Fountain With Flowers

Tiered water fountains not only add a visually interesting focal point to your yard, but also they provide a subtle bubbling sound that lends an air of tranquility to the area. If you want to add even more interest to your current tiered water fountain, consider adding flowers to it. How you integrate the flowers with the fountain will depend upon the style of your tiered fountain --- whether it is formal or rustic --- and the location of the fountain. For example, some flowers do best in full sun, whereas other do better in partial shade.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant a flowering vine near the base of a formal stone water fountain. Train the vines upward and around the base of the fountain so that the flowering vine eventually covers the base of the fountain.

    • 2

Drain water from tiered terracotta pot fountains, allow the pots to thoroughly dry and brush off any debris. Hand paint flowers onto the exterior of the pots and allow the paint to cure before adding water again.

    • 3

Add water lilies to the bottom level of a tiered stone or barrel fountain that receives full sun. The bottom level should be at least 15 inches in diameter and at least 10 inches deep, notes the University of Illinois Extension. Add at least 2 to 4 inches of soil to the pot where the containing the plant and weight the rhizome down with 1/2 to 3/4 inch of pea gravel. Position the flowering plant where it won't be directly beneath the water flow from the tier right above it.
