DIY Rock Work

Rocks are a very common building material for gardens because they blend in naturally without drawing too much attention to themselves. Rocks are used for a variety of landscaping purposes such as creating rock waterfalls, lining trees or gardens, building rock walls or even laid as rock pathways. Regardless of what type of rock work you are creating, planning and preparation will make working with rocks a lot easier --- this heavy material isn't something that is easy to relocate.

Instructions

Design a plan for your rock project. Before you buy your rocks it is important to consider exactly what rocks you will need for your project. For example, if you are building a rock wall you will need to find large flat rocks whereas if you are filling in a path with stones you'll need lots of smaller rocks. Use graph paper to help map out your home, lawn and garden.

Prepare the area where you are going to place the rocks. Depending on the project you will need to do a bit of prep work before you lay the rocks. If you are building a rock pathway, lay down sheets of landscaping fabric to prevent grass and weeds from sprouting between your stones. If you are building a rock wall that is sunk into the ground, dig any trenches to place the rocks into so they stay in place.

Purchase your rocks from a local landscaping company or building supply store. Rocks are heavy materials to work with and you might need to bring a trailer or strong friend to help you successfully get the materials into your backyard.

Place the rocks according to your design. If you're using large rocks you'll be happy you created a design. Rocks are heavy and can be difficult to move if you've placed them in the wrong spot --- stick to your design and you will have to move them as little as possible.

Secure any rocks using mortar. Some projects such as rock pathways or large rock walls will need to be secured with mortar --- a wet concrete substance that hardens as it dries. Apply mortar on rock paths to keep weeds from sprouting through, or between layers of rock in a wall to keep the wall from toppling over.
