Do It Yourself Cement Yard Edging

Planting flower beds or gardens in your yard can provide the satisfaction of having successfully grown plants while beautifying your yard or providing fresh vegetables. While the beds will have a sharp, clean edge when you first install them, over time they will erode, or the lawn surrounding the beds will begin to overgrow the edges. You can prevent this from happening by installing cement edging stones around the beds.

Things You'll Need

  • Cement stones
  • Spray paint
  • Shovel
  • Hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the cement stones on the ground around the edge of the bed where you want to install the stones. Spray paint a line on each side of the stones that is about an inch away from the stones. Remove the stones.

    • 2

Dig a trench in the ground between the lines. The trench should be deep enough to hold the stones halfway in the ground.

    • 3

Hammer a wooden stake into the ground at each end of the trench. Tie a mason's line between the stakes.

    • 4

Set the first stone into the trench, placing the front edge of the stone against the edge of the trench. Slide a mason's line down until it rests on top of the stone. Check the stone for level. If needed, tap it down with a rubber mallet until it's level.

    • 5

Place another stone into the trench next to the first stone. Lay a level across both of the stones. Tap the second stone down to even it out with the first stone if it's higher and add dirt underneath it if it's lower than the first stone.

    • 6

Finish installing the stones in the trench.

    • 7

Install a second mason's line at the corner of the bed if you're installing edging on the side of the bed that runs perpendicular to the edging on the first side. If the bed is curved, use pre-cut curved stones in the trench. Continue setting stones until the bed is finished.

Backfill the gaps around the back edge of the stones with dirt. Add water to the dirt to get it damp and step on the soil to compact it.
