How to Build a Mini Zen Rock Garden

Miniature Zen rock gardens capture the essence of the stylized space but on a smaller scale, making them suitable for offices or homes. Featuring basic elements such as sand and rocks to depict water and mountains, the dry landscape gardens promote tranquility and harmony and provide an outlet for stress and anxiety. Place the mini garden on an office desk or a tabletop at home to help you unwind during or after a stressful day.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a spot for the miniature Zen garden. Place a sturdy cardboard shoe box or any box that is 3- to 5- inches deep on the table.

    • 2

Pour fine white sand or smooth granite into the box until it is 2/3 full. Tap the outer edge of the box to spread the sand evenly over the base and level it.

    • 3

Embed three to five rocks into the sand. Position them near the edges or arrange them randomly. Use rocks of different sizes and shapes with attractive textures, colors or patterns to enhance the appeal of the landscape garden. Avoid cluttering the mini garden with too many rocks; the arrangement should be simple.

    • 4

Place pebbles into the container for added appeal. Depending on personal preference, place these near the rocks to create an arrangement that becomes progressively smaller or group four or five in the center of the box, away from the rocks. Gently press them into the sand to anchor them securely in place.

    • 5

Embellish the miniature garden with a tiny wood statue or bridge, if you desire.

    • 6

Rake the sand using a small comb, fork or miniature rake. Create "ripples" around the rocks and pebbles to mimic the natural flow of water around rocks.
