Cut wooden or plastic lattice pieces for your planter box. Cut two 2- to 3-foot lengths for the sides and two more 2- to 3-foot lengths for the ends. Cut one piece for the bottom, according to the measurements for your planter. As an example, if the planter measures 4 feet long by 4 feet wide, cut a bottom piece 4 feet by 4 feet to match. Cut the side and end pieces to measure 6 to 12 inches in height.
Line each piece of lattice with a matching piece of screen or wire mesh. Staple the mesh to the lattice to contain the soil and plant roots.
Cut 20 4-inch pieces of wire to secure the lattice together. Set these pieces aside for use during the building process.
Stand one end piece and one side piece up at a 90-degree angle to form one side and one end of your planter. Secure these pieces together with pieces of wire at the top and bottom of the corner. Repeat for the other side and other end of your planter box.
Lay the bottom of the planter against the planter box and secure it with pieces of wire spaced every 4 inches along the sides and end.
Turn the planter over to set the bottom on the ground and fill it with a mix of organic compost and garden loam. Add 5-10-10 or 10-10-10 fertilizer before planting.
