How to Dig Up Edgers

When you wish to redesign a landscape area, one of the first tasks may be to dig up the edgers that currently surround the area. While some edgers simply sit on the soil, others stay in place with long stakes that run into the soil beneath the edgers. After removing the edgers, you will be ready to make the changes you desire in the landscape.

Instructions

    • 1

Position a wheelbarrow near the work area to collect the edgers as you remove them from the landscape.

    • 2

Position a garden spade on the inside edge of the edger (inside the landscape area) with the tines directed beneath the edger. Push the spade into the soil to loosen the soil beneath the edger. This should loosen the stake that holds the edger in place. Repeat this process at every edger to loosen each one.

    • 3

Grasp an edger with both hands and work it loose. Because you have already loosened the soil, the stake should come out of the soil without much resistance. Pull the edger and the stake out of the soil.

    • 4

Place the edger and the stake into the wheelbarrow.

    • 5

Repeat the same process to dig up each edger and stake from the soil.
