How to Build Hanging Plant Shelves in the Window

A window planter works both on the outside of your windows, to give the exterior of your home a bit of color, and on the inside of your windows, to bring the garden inside. Planting brightly colored flowers in outside window boxes will help spruce up plainly colored exteriors. Planting herbs inside your indoor window boxes will give you year-round access to fresh spices. With a few supplies and some time, you can make your own window planters.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the bottom of the window with a measuring tape. Measure the width you want the window box to extend from the window by placing the measuring tape against the windowpane and pulling outward until you reach the desired length. Write both measurements down.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of pressure-treated wood in the length of the window, using a power saw. These two pieces will become the back and front of the window planter.

    • 3

Cut one piece of wood both the length of the window and the width of the window planter. This piece will become the bottom of the window planter.

    • 4

Cut two pieces of wood the width of the planter. These pieces will become the sides.

    • 5

Line the back piece against the bottom piece so the two pieces sit perpendicular to each other at a 90-degree angle. Use an electric drill and predrill one hole into each side of the back piece. Use the drill holes to push two deck screws through both the back and bottom pieces, securing the pieces together. Drill two holes at the top of the back piece to attach the window box to the window.

    • 6

Line the front piece against the bottom piece so it forms a 90-degree angle and matches the height of the back piece. Predrill two holes into each side of the front piece. Attach the front piece to the bottom piece with two deck screws.

    • 7

Drill two holes on each side of one of the side pieces. Line the side piece against the bottom piece. Secure the side piece to the front and back pieces with four deck screws. Repeat for the other side.

    • 8

Lightly sand the outside of the planter with sandpaper. Paint the outside of the painted with a water-resistant paint. Allow the planter to dry completely.

    • 9

Attach the planter to the window by using the drill to secure two deck screws through the predrilled holes in the back of the planter to the window.
