Algae Free Pools Without the Chemicals

Ponds add ambiance and style to a landscape design, but they also detract from the overall appearance of your yard when layers of thick algae form over the surface of the water, creating a green, murky façade. You can keep your pond water clear and inviting without using a lot of caustic chemicals and expensive treatments.
  1. Circulation

    • A continual source of circulation is one of the most important factors in keeping your water clear and free of algae, as stagnant water increases the risk of algae growth. A pond intake and outlet creates constant circulation, although this can be costly and wasteful in many situations. A filtration system or pump is a supplementary method of circulating the water within your pond or water garden. Select a filtration system or pond pump based on the amount of water within your system.

    Competing Vegetation

    • Algae and plants compete for nutrients and light. Grow hardy varieties of pond plants, such as water lettuce, lily pads, duckweed and water hyacinth in your pond environment. These floating plants will discourage the growth of algae. They also proved safety and shelter for the fish in your pond water. Depending on your pond environment, some of these plants may become as much a nuisance as the algae. Keep the plants in check by weeding and maintaining your watery growing environment every few weeks throughout the active growing season.

    Barley Straw

    • Decomposing barley straw destroys many types of algae. The general rule of thumb when using this method of algae control is about .025 pounds of dried straw in a mesh bag for every square yard of surface area. Tie the bag to a weighted object, such as a rock, and place it in the center of the pond. Place the barley straw in the pond in the spring and allow it to remain over the warm summer months, removing it after four to six months. Although this method kills most types of algae, some won’t respond.

    Fish

    • Fish are one of the main reasons many homeowners choose to install ponds and water gardens. Improper feeding can increase the risk of algae growth. Feed your fish only as much as they can eat within five minutes. This frugal method of feeding can help cut down on algae growth.
