How to Build an Oval Flowerbed on a Slope With Landscape Bricks

Building flowerbeds with landscape bricks creates a long-lasting, low-maintenance container. Bricks do not have to be replaced as often as wood products, which eventually rot when exposed to the weather. Landscape bricks are made from non-toxic natural materials that may even be from recycled sources. Unlike some landscaping timbers, landscape bricks are not treated with chemicals to reduce the growth of vegetation surrounding them. Landscape bricks are suitable for building on slopes and add to the beauty of an oval flowerbed.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the weeds and debris from the construction site. Create a level area, cutting into the slope with a shovel. Dig out a 2-inch deep trench in the front of the flowerbed. Cut the walls with a flat-bladed shovel, so they are straight up and down.

Check the evenness of the bottom of the trench with a carpenter’s level. Use the end of a 2-by-4-inch board to compact the soil at the bottom of the trench.

    • 3

Place the first row of landscape bricks into the bottom of the oval trench. Set the bricks tightly next to each other and tap the bricks into place with a rubber hammer. Once the foundation layer is in place, stagger the next layer of bricks so that the ends of the bricks are not directly over top of each other.

Build the other layers of the oval flowerbed until it is the desired height. Spread a 2-inch layer of gravel in the bottom of the flowerbed to improve drainage. Mix together 2 parts potting soil, 1 part peat moss and 1 part well-rotted compost. Fill the brick oval with the soil mixture. Rake the soil level and plant.
