Feng Shui Garden Ideas

Feng Shui encompasses how people relate to everything -- people, animals, plants, surroundings and the environment, explains feng shui practitioner Tony Lefler. A home’s chi, or natural energy, needs to flow freely inside and out for productive or positive benefits. Gardens, holding more than just plants, hold many keys to influence good chi.
  1. Wind

    • Wind flows around the earth's inhabitants, representing the world’s natural curve. Use particular wind chimes to call or redirect natural energy, suggests Kathryn Weber on the website Red Lotus Letter. She recommends a bamboo wind chime with four rods in a garden that sits at the southeast corner of your yard to summon wealth; a ceramic feature with five rods in northeast or southwest gardens to improve relationships and education; and a wooden three-rod chime to the east for better health. Only hang wooden wind chimes without any metal features in trees, so as not to create a conflict between the elements, says Weber.

    Water

    • A garden water feature, such as a gurgling fountain, summons good chi. But if the water is allowed to sit stagnant or collect debris, it has the opposite effect, says feng shui expert Ken Lauher. Replace still water, like that of birdbath, with clean, fresh water as required. And keep scale in mind; no one feature or element of your garden, from thorny plants to wind chimes to ponds, should seem to overpower the other for balance and harmony.

    Rocks

    • Rocks often appear as borders in home gardens. A stone statue seems fitting set among a flower bed of delicate greenery. That’s because these solid, strong features ground energy and provide a sense of steadfastness. Use stone or rock work to ward off a disconcerting situation, suggests Lefler.

    Plants

    • It’s best to leave the center of your yard clear of anything, including plants, so as not to obstruct the flow of chi. In other areas, however, healthy plants of various colors produce positive energy, says the website OM Times. White flowers attract helpful people into your life, pink and red flora strengthen a marriage and summon romance, and blue or purple posies lure wealth your way. A yard -- no matter how big or small -- benefits from cleanliness. Clear away fallen leaves and dead plant material, sweep pathways and keep a front door free of marring and grime, ready to welcome family members home, greet guests and encourage positive chi.
