Garden Ideas With Water Features

Landscape your property with specialty garden areas that include some type of water feature along with flowers and greenery for seasonal color. Create an oasis in your backyard with a flowing river bed, or make a small rock garden to enhance your home’s curb appeal. Select flowers, grasses and shrubs designed to flourish in sun or shade and water features that work as focal points or as accents.

  1. Rustic Country Garden

    • Simulate a river bed as a central focus in a rustic country garden. Excavate a strip of land into a winding river bed that ends in a small garden pond. Preformed plastic garden pond liners work as the end point of the river bed. Line the excavated area with plastic pond liner sheets and then cover the liner with medium to large size river rocks. Direct the water from the submersible fountain pump inside the pond to the beginning of the river bed with plastic tubing. Landscape the garden around the rustic water feature with perennial flowers such as day lilies and roses and ornamental grasses such as pampas grass and feather reed.

    Crystal Rainbow Garden

    • Complement a sun-loving flower garden with hanging crystals and a water fountain to create a crystal rainbow garden. Plant an area of your landscape that enjoys full sun with perennial selections that include day lilies, cat mint, columbine, delphinium, peonies, sage and sweet William. Include sun-loving annuals such as petunias, cockscomb, begonias and Gerbera daisies. Place a three-tiered water fountain in the center of the flower garden. Hang crystal prisms from shepherd’s hooks scattered throughout the garden space. Vary the heights of the shepherd’s hooks to maximize the crystal features.

    Flowering Shrub Garden

    • Plant rows of flowering shrubs in planting beds along a garden fence for colorful property borders. Hydrangea, camellia, gardenia and azalea are a few of the flowering shrubs that will bloom years after year. Hang wall fountains every 4 to 5 feet along the length of the garden wall to add dimension and design interest. Select wall hanging water features with varying designs to create an eclectic garden space.

    Water Fountain Rock Garden

    • Excavate an area of your landscape to highlight a decorative water fountain inside a rock garden. Cover the excavation with landscape cloth to prevent weeds, then plant compact perennial flowers, ornamental grasses and dwarf flowering shrubs sporadically or as a border for the garden. Place the three- to five-tiered fountain in the center of the garden area as the main feature. Fill in the garden around the water fountain and the plants with white landscaping rocks.
