How to Create a Tiered Garden

When growing space is at a premium around your home, a raised bed can offer fresh, usable soil, but may be uncomfortable to work with. By constructing a tiered bed you can enjoy all the benefits of raised beds with better access to your plants and the ability to lift some plants above others to expose them to more sunlight. It's possible to build a tiered garden frame in an afternoon and then place it, either as a standalone bed or against a wall or fence, for immediate planting.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 boards, 2-by-12 inches by 4 feet
  • 4 boards, 2-by-12 inches by 3 feet
  • 4 boards, 2-by-12 inches by 2 feet
  • Galvanized screws
  • Screwdriver or electric drill
  • 3 posts, 2-by-2 inches by 3 feet
  • 28 cubic feet of potting soil

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange the four 4-foot boards into a square shape that is 1 foot tall. Insert two evenly spaced screws at each corner to attach the boards together and form a frame.

    • 2

Place the 4-foot square on flat ground along an area where it will receive the appropriate amount of sun for the plants you want to grow.

    • 3

Create two more square frames, one using the 3-foot boards and the other using the 2-foot boards.

    • 4

Place the 3-foot square over the 4-foot square. Align one corner so two sides of the smaller square rest on top of two sides of the larger square. This will leave a 1-foot-wide planting space along two sides of the 4-foot square.

    • 5

Place the 2-foot square over the 3-foot square and align it on top of the 3-foot square so all three frames share the same corner. This will leave a 1-foot-wide planting area on two sides of the 3-foot square so that the tiered garden resembles a pyramid of sorts.

    • 6

Stand one post upright and position it along the shared inside corner of all three square frames. Insert screws through the sides of the tiered bed and into the corner post every 6 to 8 inches to connect the frames together.

    • 7

Place the remaining two posts upright along the two corners of the 2-foot square adjacent to the main shared corner. Insert screws to attach. Fill the bed area with potting soil and plant as desired.
