How to Cut Fence Wire

Fence installation or repair involves various activities including driving posts, attaching fence materials and cutting fence wire. Fence wire, although small in diameter, is hard as it must withstand stress and strain once it is installed. To cut fence wire it is necessary to use special heavy cutters that are similar to smaller electrical wire cutters but are designed with longer handles for more leverage.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on gloves to protect hands and safety glasses to protect eyes when cutting fence wire to prevent potential injury.

    • 2

Determine the exact location along the fence where the wire should be cut. Choose a location based on the amount of fence needed for installation or to cut out a damaged section to make a repair.

    • 3

Hold the fence wire cutters and spread the handles apart to open the cutting jaws.

    • 4

Place the cutting jaws over the fence wire so that the wire rests back in the jaws as far as possible for best cutting results.

    • 5

Press the handles together to clamp the jaws of the fence wire cutter together against the wire. Continue pressing the handles together with enough force to cut the wire.
