Tools for Invisible Fence Installation

Invisible pet fences help confine your dog to the yard using an underground wire, transmitter collar and wall mount transmitter. Before you can use the fence you must install the hidden fence wire and mount the transmitter inside a home or outbuilding with electricity. Some standard and some special tools are needed to install the invisible fence.
  1. Digging

    • Digging the trench in soil requires a trench digger or a spade shovel. Trench diggers vary in size. The small trench digger is a walk-behind trencher that takes about a full day to dig one acre of land. The larger cable trench digger will take less time. Spade shovels will dig a trench but they take longer to use and require the physical ability to work the shovel.

    Cutting

    • Fencing that is installed over concrete sidewalks or driveways require a trench to lay the wire. For this particular part of the installation, you need a concrete circular saw with a concrete blade. The blade cuts a trench about 1/2 to 1 inch deep in the concrete so you can lay the wire across the concrete.

    Mounting

    • Mounting the transmitter requires a drill and 1/4-inch drill bit to drill a hole from the inside of the building to the outside for the wire to fit through. The transmitter is mounted using a Phillips or flat screwdriver, depending on the type of unit. Wire cutters are used to remove wire insulation so the wires can be attached to the transmitter.

    Burying

    • After the wire is laid in the ground, the sod or soil must be replaced to cover the wire. Tampers (long handle with a flat piece of metal on one end) are used to tamp down the ground over the wire. You could use your foot, but it may become tiring after a short time. When burying the wire across the concrete, concrete silicon caulking is needed to cover and seal the trench. You will need a caulking gun to perform the task.
