Styles of Wood Fences

Solid

• As the name implies, a solid wood fence features boards that are placed flush against one another so they form a solid panel. They are usually built quite high, averaging around 6 feet, which makes an ideal option if you desire privacy and security for your yard. Because of its simple design, a solid wood fence is usually budget friendly. While several types of wood are suitable for this type of fence, cedar is often used for solid style fencing.

Picket

• For a traditional look, few wood fencing options top the picket fence. Unlike a solid fence, it is usually on the shorter side, typically running between 3 and 4 feet, and features posts that have a pointed top that give the fence its distinctive look and name. The pickets are widely spaced so the fence does not offer any privacy. However, it is an attractive option for your front yard when you want to showcase your landscape but have children or animals that you wish to contain.

Lattice

• Another decorative style of wood fence that is ideal for a garden, patio or deck is the lattice fence. It features wood strips that are placed in a crisscross pattern, so small diamond shapes are formed that allow light and wind to pass through. A lattice fence does not offer total privacy but can slightly obscure the view. If you wish to increase the privacy that it provides, climbing plants and vines may be trained to grow over it. Lattice fencing is available in a range of heights, so you can customize it to meet your needs.

Shadowbox

• A wooden shadowbox fence, also known as a good neighbor fence, features a decorative appearance on both sides of the fencing so your property and the property beside you are both treated to an attractive view. It is constructed by placing the planks at evenly spaced intervals on either side of the rails and covering both sides of the fence with paneling. You can control the amount of privacy that the fence offers by placing the planks closer or further apart. A shadowbox fence is also ideal if you prefer fencing that allows air and light to flow through it.

Spilt Rail

• Wooden spilt rail fences offer a rustic, country look for your property because they are often used on ranches and farms. It is a low style fence that provides no privacy but is effective in establishing property lines around your home. Spilt rail fencing features a series of rails, typically ranging from two to three, that are evenly spaced between its posts. It is fairly easy to install, so it is usually one of the more inexpensive types of wood fencing.
