Toddlers, pests and pets can quickly become a threat to new gardens. While pests such as moles are easily blocked with some well-submerged bricks, above-ground pests require fencing. The cheapest and most widely available material for building fencing around a garden is chicken wire. For homes with young children, coated rustproof chicken wire is available at gardening centers and can be hung by do-it-yourselfers.

1
Position the stakes into the ground, spacing each stake no farther than 2 feet apart.

2
Dig a thin 2-inch trench just in front of the stakes, using a shovel. This will allow you to partially submerge the fencing for better rabbit and rat protection.
