How Can a Stockade Fence Be Lifted?

Stockade fences are made up of a series of vertical wooden slats, braced by three horizontal boards that are supported by posts. The ends of the boards fit into mortises carved through the posts. When a post rots off, you need to raise the fence to replace the post. Lifting it allows the ends of the horizontal bracing boards to pull out of the mortised holes in the post.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a 1-inch thick piece of plywood down on the ground next to the side of the fence where the horizontal brace boards are visible.

    • 2

Set the base of an automobile bumper jack down on the board. Slide the lifting platform of the jack beneath the lowest horizontal bracing board.

    • 3

Raise and lower the handle of the jack up and down to lift the fence. Continue lifting until the fence is as high as you want it.
