Some zoning laws require a setback between the fence and the property line. In some cases this may not allow enough room for a fence. In other cases ordinances prevent fences that block the view of motorists at corners. It is the responsibility of the builder to obtain any necessary permits and verify the legality of building the fence at the desired location.
Building a privacy fence requires the use of many basic carpentry tools such as power saws, hammers, levels, screw guns and carpenter's string. Do-it-yourselfers with a background in carpentry and knowledge about using these tools will be able to build a privacy fence. Along with the skills, the builder must have time enough to complete the project.
In addition to such common carpentry tools as a hammer, power saw, level and screw gun, the project requires a post hole digger or auger along with tamping tools. While some do-it-yourselfers may possess these tools, most others will opt to rent the tools from rental outlets or home improvement stores.
A privacy fence requires fence posts, wood rails for horizontal supports and the vertical fence boards, along with construction screws and/or nails plus concrete to set the posts. A large fence project can require hundreds of pounds of materials. Some homeowners have the materials delivered if they do not have a vehicle capable of hauling the materials.
