Uses for Decorative Lattice

Lattice is constructed of flat wooden or plastic strips adhered at cross sections to form a decorative panel. It is a common pattern for use in garden and landscaping projects. The design is simple, yet functional as it can be used to offer privacy to an open backyard or be made into a planter. The crossed strips are frequently used to form decorative fences or trellises to enhance the outdoor space of the home.
  1. Screen

    • A screen constructed in a lattice pattern can be a good solution to hide less desirable areas of the outdoor space of a home. Air conditioning units, trash cans or other exterior elements that are necessary, but not visually appealing can easily be concealed with a decorative lattice panel. The screen should be placed in a stable position so it cannot be knocked over easily. It should then be stored indoors in high winds or extreme weather to prevent damage. These same screens can be used as privacy panels as well once set up against the periphery of the backyard.

    Trellis

    • Lattice is commonly used to construct trellises for gardens and backyards. There is a wide variety of different types of trellises that can be made from this material such as ones resembling doorways, to ones that form an outdoor hallway with seating below along with a water feature. Trellises often are threaded with greenery to further protect the owners from prying eyes. These are simple decorative uses for lattice that looks elegant and professional. A patio area can be ornamented with a trellis or two that will provide privacy screening and decor to the outdoor space.

    Planter

    • A lattice panel planter is a simple do-it-yourself project for those who are so inclined, but can also be purchased at any home store. An outdoor planter must be resistant to the weather, so the lattice used should be made of pressure treated pine or other resistant wood. The panels should be identical and 16x16 inches square. A thin panel of plywood that is weather resistant and the same size should be adhered to the back of each panel, with yet another one on the bottom. Two should easily add an elegant look to the patio entrance with a planted tree or large shrub.

    Gazebo or Enclosure

    • A gazebo constructed of lattice panels offers an interesting structure to gather under the stars. Greenery should be added for privacy while the roof can be left bare to allow moon, sun and star light in. A different type of enclosure can be constructed for the same purpose, however in a more modern fashion. Simple rectangular lattice panels installed into the ground and threaded with greenery will create a great space to relax in the backyard.
