How to Cut & Splice Chain Link Fabric

Chain link is a mesh wire fence installed around terminal posts. The fence keeps pets and kids in the yard while allowing a view of the surrounding area. Chain link is purchased in large rolls. Depending on the area you are fencing in, you will need to either add or remove chain link. Adding chain link is referred to as splicing. The removal of chain link does not entail cutting. However, cut off overhanging pieces to prevent clothing snags as you walk past.

Instructions

  1. Cut Chain Link

    • 1

Grasp the chain link's top loop with pliers. Twist the pliers to open the loop.

    • 2

Move down to the chain link's bottom loop. Double check that the two loops you open hold the same strand of wire. Open the loop with pliers.

    • 3

Pull the loose wire up, out of the chain link. Once the wire is out, the two sections of chain link are separated.

    • 4

Stretch the chain link tight toward the terminal post. If one end of the chain link extends past the post further than the other end, cut off the excess with wire cutters. Make the cut through the diamond pattern and keep it approximately 1 inch away from the terminal post. Use pliers to bend the wires over the post.

    Splice Chain Link

    • 5

Remove a strand of wire from the end of a chain link roll. Position the two rolls of chain link next to each other, end to end.

    • 6

Weave the loose strand of metal through the diamond pattern of the two chain link pieces. Put it up through one diamond, bend it toward the other chain link piece and push it down through another diamond. Use pliers to bend the loose strand as you weave it back and forth.

Use pliers to twist the new strand's ends with the loose ends on the two joining pieces.
