Mark the locations for the male portion of the gate hinges on the gate post. These hinges include a peg that will extend through the opening of the female portion of the hinge attached to the gate. Mark the location on the post about 6 inches above the planned bottom of the gate and the same distance below the top of the gate. Exact placement is not necessary. You can adjust the female portion of the hinges to fit the male hinge placement.
Drill holes through the gate post at the marked positions. Use a bit 1 /16 inch smaller than the shaft of the male hinge.
Insert the shaft of the male portion of the hinge into the hole. Use a wrench to rotate the hinge to turn it into the hole created in the post. Turn the hinge until the flange near the L-shaped end of the hinge is tight against the post. Point the bottom hinge up and the top hinge down. This prevents livestock from pushing the gate up and off the hinges and escaping.
Place the gate on blocks in the gate opening. Position so the female hinges are near the male portions. Loosen the bolts holding the female hinges to the pipe gate frame. Slide the female hinge portion up or down so that it fits over the male portion of the hinge. Tighten the bolts to hold the female hinges in place.
Check the latch chain for proper fit around the gate post. The chain is attached to the gate and wraps around the post and clips to the gate. Large gate posts may need more links to the chain.
