How to Stain a Fence With a Power Painter

A wooden fence will provide an attractive addition to any home, as well as a way to protect your children and pets while playing outdoors. Stain is used to change the appearance of a deck as well as provide protection from wind, rain and snow. A Wagner Power Painter is a fast, effective way to cover any wooden fence with stain in a fraction of the time. Before the stain is applied the fence must be properly prepared, which involves removing any old paint, dirt or mold.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any old paint and dirt from the fence by washing it off with a garden hose. Use a spray nozzle attachment and concentrate the water on the areas that are especially covered with dirt or debris.

    • 2

Scrape off any remaining paint with a plastic putty knife.

    • 3

Prepare a mixture of 1 cup chlorine bleach and 1 gallon water. Dip a plastic scrub brush into the mixture and use it to remove any mold or mildew on the fence. Allow the bleach to remain for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse it away with the garden hose.

    • 4

Allow the fence to dry for at least 48 hours before continuing. This will ensure that the stain will adhere more effectively.

    • 5

Cover the ground directly in front of the area of fence being stained with a piece of tarp. This will protect any grass or foliage under the fence from being covered with the stain.

    • 6

Remove the plastic material container from the main unit by twisting the pump housing ring counterclockwise. Pull out the suction tube and fill the plastic container with the stain. Thoroughly mix the stain with a wooden paint stirrer before pouring it in to ensure that the stain is applied without blotches.

    • 7

Reattach the suction tube and turn the housing ring clockwise to reapply it to the unit. Plug in the Wagner Power Painter.

    • 8

Locate the correct spraying speed by adjusting flow knob, which is located on the rear of the unit. Turn the sprayer counterclockwise fully to obtain the highest setting. Point the Wagner Power Painter at an unwanted piece of wood and continue to adjust the flow knob until the stain begins to spray evenly.

    • 9

Hold the Power Painter 10 to 12 inches from the fence and lightly press on the trigger to begin spraying the stain onto the fence using steady back and forth motions. Cover the fence in 2 to 3 foot sections.

    • 10

Examine the section of fence covered with the stain for any paint drips. Even out these drips with a small paintbrush.

    • 11

Continue to spray paint the entire fence in the 2 to 3 foot sections, paying attention to stop and smooth out any paint drips.

    • 12

Unplug the unit immediately after you have completed covering the fence. Remove the material container and suction tube. Pour any remaining stain back into its original container.
