How to Build a Rock Ledge Border

You can make a border at the base of the front edge of a rock ledge by making a rock wall planter. The rock wall planter will naturally complement the rock ledge. In addition to blending in with its surroundings, the planter will allow you to add flowers, small shrubs and other plants that will accent the border. You can change the appearance of the border seasonally for a decorative touch year-round.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark off the perimeter of the rock planter border along the base of the front edge of the rock ledge using landscaping spray paint. Select an area at the front of the ledge where it starts to project from the surface of the ground. Spray paint the outline of the inside edge of the planter.

    • 2

Lay the base layer of rocks end to end inside the painted lines for the border. Select large, reasonably flat rocks for the base layer.

    • 3

Cut rocks to fit by striking the rock with a stone chisel and small sledgehammer. The chisel will split the rock to the size needed for the space within the rock wall planter. Continue building the rocks up until you reach the desired height. Make sure that the joints are staggered to create a stable wall. Cap the top of the wall planter off with small, flat stones.

Fill the bottom 4 inches of the wall planter with gravel. Fill the remaining depth of the wall planter with soil. Rake over the surface of the soil with a bow rake to smooth it out. Cover over the soil with mulch. You can plant any flowers or small shrubs that you desire to decorate the border.
