How to Cut a Galvanized Rod

Some applications around the house make metal the ideal material to use. Whether it's a chain link fence, piping or playground hardware, metal is the best option. The problem with most metals is that they corrode when exposed to the elements. This is true with steel, but a technique known as galvanization has been used since 1772 to combat the corrosion of such metals. Cutting these metals can seem difficult, but with the proper tools and technique, it can prove to be straightforward and useful.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of rod that will be needed for your application with a tape measure. Be sure to include any portion of the rod that might be driven into the ground for something like fence posts.

    • 2

Mark the necessary length on the rod with the pencil.

    • 3

Place the rod in the vise to ensure a stable work platform. Block the teeth of the vise with scrap wood to protect the rod, if necessary.

    • 4

Use a hacksaw to cut the rod according to the mark. Maintain a smooth even stroke to allow the saw teeth to effectively cut the material.

    • 5

Remove any burs left behind from the saw with a metal file.

    • 6

Spray the freshly cut end of the rod with the cold galvanizing spray paint. Be sure to the entire end surface and continue up the rod 2-3 inches to ensure adequate coverage.
