How to Wash a Fence With Chemicals

Fences are an asset to any property, providing both security and privacy. However, over time, exposure to the outdoor elements causes them to look dingy and gray, in the case of wooden fences. To restore the bright appearance of the fencing, you must use chemical cleaners to remove tough stains and dirt. Because these cleaners are designed to work without scrubbing, they are very powerful. Always wear the proper safety gear when washing the fence with chemicals.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the ground under the fence and any nearby plants or shrubs with a plastic tarp to protect them from damage by chemicals.

    • 2

Put on safety glasses and gloves to protect your skin from the chemical cleaning solution.

    • 3

Fill a garden sprayer with a chemical cleaning solution designed for the type of fence that you have. Do not use chemicals designed for wood on vinyl fences or vice versa, because damage can occur.

    • 4

Screw the top onto the garden sprayer and point the nozzle at the fence. Apply the chemical solution to the fence in an up-and-down direction, making sure to cover all parts of it.

    • 5

Allow the solution to sit for the amount of time indicated on the package, but do not let it dry.

    • 6

Put on safety glasses and attach a pressure washer to a garden hose. If your pressure washer has a tank, fill the tank with water. Set the pressure on the washer to between 500 and 800 pounds per square inch.

    • 7

Turn the pressure washer on and hold the nozzle at least 1 foot away from the fence to prevent damage. Spray the fence from side to side in small sections, starting at the top of the fence and working toward the ground to wash the chemicals downward.
