How to Make a Brick Post

Calculate the number of bricks needed to build the post. Bricks come in various sizes but the standard brick size is 4 x 2-3/8 x 8 inches. It is recommended to save time and labor by choosing a final project dimension that does not require cutting bricks.

Excavate and prepare the ground for a brick post by removing grass, topsoil and rocks. Use a level to verify the excavated ground is even in both directions.

Mix the mortar, following the manufacturer's directions.

Construct the first structural layer. Bricks need to be laid end to end around the excavated ground until the width of the structure has been reached. Mortar the joining edges of the bricks with a mason's trowel.

Verify the base is level in all directions of the structure base. Unlevel bricks can be corrected by building them up with a layer of mortar.

Fill the inside of the base with mortar or concrete. This provides stability to the structure.

Build the next level of the post structure, mortaring the layers together. Add a layer of mortar between each joining end of the bricks. The second layer is laid opposite of the first layer. If the end of the first lay brick is visible, the side of the second layer brick will be visible.

Verify the layers are level horizontally and vertically. Make adjustments as required.

Fill the inside of the base with mortar or concrete.

Repeat steps 7 through 9.

Stop every four or five layers and touch up the mortar joints with a round mortar jointer. Clean up excess mortar from the bricks using a whisk broom.

Finish the brick post by adding a post cap and additional hardware. Post caps are attached to the top of the post for a finished appearance. Multiple sizes are available or they can be custom made. Contact the post cap manufacturer for assembly and attachment instructions.
