How to Use Self-Leveling Cement

Using self-leveling cement for your outdoor projects is an excellent idea, particularly if the area is not going to be subjected to vehicle traffic. Before pouring a walkway or patio, it is typically necessary to ensure that the ground within the area is perfectly level and graded appropriately. Although this is still an important step in the process of pouring cement, it is not always necessary to make sure the surface is completely flat when you are using self-leveling cement. It should still be very close, though, because although self-leveling cement can correct many mishaps in the grading process, it can only cover very small ones.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean and dry approved substrate surfaces. Check the manufacturer's directions to obtain a list of approved substrates.

    • 2

Add 50 lbs. of self-leveling cement powder to 6 quarts of cool water and mix thoroughly at a slow speed with a paddle mixer or shovel until the mixture is smooth. Add more water until the cement is the consistency of pancake batter. Use self-leveling cement immediately, as it cannot be remixed.

    • 3

Pour the self-leveling cement where it needs to be, and smooth it out with a squeegee. Allow the self-leveling cement to dry for at least three or four hours before allowing traffic on the area. The cement is fully cured 72 hours after pouring.
