How to Build an Accent Fence

Backyards are often the destination of choice for leisure time with family and friends and a lot of effort goes into making them both functional and beautiful. Corner accent fences are a classic way to highlight improvements or mark the boundaries of a space. Whether you're planting a garden, laying a stone surface for the grill or creating a play space for the kids this season, show off your efforts with an easy-to-build accent fence.

Things You'll Need

  • 4-by-8-foot pre-assembled fence panel
  • 3 4-by-4-inch fence posts
  • Exterior primer
  • Paint brushes
  • Waterproof wood sealant
  • 3 30-inch deep fence post holders
  • Sledgehammer
  • Tape measure
  • Screwdriver or drill
  • Deck screws
  • 1-by-1-inch furring strips

      Cut a 4-by-8-foot wooden fence panel in half so you have two 4-foot-square pieces.

      Paint the wooden pieces with exterior primer and allow to dry. Apply two coats of waterproof sealant to protect your accent fence from weather damage.

      Determine where the corner of your accent fence will be and use a sledgehammer to pound a fence post holder into that spot. Slide a fence post into the holder and secure it by tightening the base screws. Position the remaining post holders so that they are 4 feet from and at a 90-degree angle to the corner post. Install the end posts in the same manner as the corner post.

      Secure a fence panel to two posts with deck screws and furring strip braces. Repeat for the other side and your corner accent fence is complete.
