How to Install a Petsafe Inground Fence

Petsafe inground fences provide a convenient way to keep your pet from wandering out of your yard. The buried fence wire transmits a radio signal that is detected by the collar around your pet's neck. If the animal strays too close to the wire, an audible tone and mild static correction encourages the pet to return to the yard. Installing a Petsafe inground fence doesn't require any special tools, although some light digging is required.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a mounting location for the control panel that is out of the weather and near an electrical outlet. Mount the control panel in the chosen location using a Phillips screwdriver and the included mounting screws.

    • 2

Decide where the perimeter of the fence will be. Walk the perimeter, marking it with paint along the way.

    • 3

Cut a shallow trench along the marked perimeter with a shovel or lawn edger. Cut another shallow trench from the control panel to the nearest point along the perimeter.

    • 4

Run the included wire from the control panel along the trench. Run the wire around the perimeter and back to the control panel. Bury the wire around the perimeter of the fence.

    • 5

Twist the wires in the trench and the control panel together. Ensure that the wires are twisted around each other at least 10 times per foot. Lay the twisted wires in the trench and bury them. Trim the remaining twisted wire to the appropriate length to reach the control panel.

    • 6

Remove 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the twisted wires with wire strippers. Press and hold the terminal clips to open the terminals. Insert the stripped end of one wire into the left terminal and the stripped end of the other wire into the right terminal. Release the terminal clips. Ensure that the bare ends of the wires are not touching at the terminals.

    • 7

Plug the power adapter into the side of the control panel. Plug the adapter transformer into an electrical outlet. Set the yard size and boundary settings according to the manufacturer's instructions.
