How to Install Framed Lattice Panels

Installing framed lattice panels around an existing deck will prevent some of the issues that arise from solid paneling or non-framed lattice. The airflow permitted by the lattice will prevent the decking from retaining heat and moisture that contributes to the decay of the deck boards. A non-framed lattice panel is susceptible to rot at the ground line, especially in areas where the decking is lower than the rest of the yard or where heavy rains are frequent, and can begin to show signs of rot within 2 years of installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any existing lattice or skirting from around the deck, including any mounting hardware.

    • 2

Measure the height of the new lattice panel. Using this measurement, prepare the ground around the deck so that the bottom of the panel will be flush with the ground.

    • 3

Install the first panel at the front left-hand corner of the deck. Use decking screws to secure the top of the panel into the bottom of the deck. Secure the left side of the panel to the corner support leg. Optionally, you can secure the panels to the deck with a hinge system by attaching one side of the hinge to the front of the deck and one to the front of each panel. Each panel will need at least two hinges. This provides easy access to the underside of the deck if repairs are needed and allows the area to be used for storage.

    • 4

Continue installing panels across the front of the deck until you reach the right-hand corner. If your last panel is too long use a skill saw to cut it to size and reattach the end board with finishing nails.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each side of the deck.

    • 6

Check the bottom edge of each panel to make sure it is flush with the ground. Any areas that are not flush can be adjusted with a shovel or rake to add, remove or level out the soil around the panel.
