DIY Lattice Fence

Trellis fences are an efficient and inexpensive way to add privacy to a garden and to give creeping vines and rose bushes support as they grow. Trellis pieces are available pre-made at many home improvement stores, come in a variety of criss-cross designs and are sold by the foot or panel. Determine what you need for your fence and buy a few extra feet to allow for breakage or pattern matching. Once you have the trellis pieces, it is simple to construct a frame for the fence and install it yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on safety goggles and gloves.

    • 2

Determine the placement of your fence and ensure that any underground lines or utilities are not in the immediate vicinity.

    • 3

Mix a small amount of concrete mix with water, as instructed by the manufacturer, in a bucket.

Mark spots for support posts, spaced 4 feet apart.

    • 4

Sink 4-by-4 support posts at least 6 inches into the ground, securing with a small amount of concrete spooned into and around the hole with a trough. Let the concrete set overnight.

    • 5

Add support between the posts by nailing a 2-by-4 between the top and bottom of each post with a hammer and a galvanized nail. Secure the seam with a line of wood glue and allow it to dry.

    • 6

Attach lattice sections between the posts, securing the lattice around the edges at the posts and to the support beam using a hammer and nail.

    • 7

Saw down any lattice sections, as needed, to fit top and bottom edges or to match the pattern and attach them with hammer and nails.

    • 8

Seal seams with wood glue and allow them to dry.
