Using a Jackhammer to Dig Fence Holes

When building a fence, it is essential that you set the fence posts so that they are firmly in the ground to prevent the fence from falling over or being blown over during a storm. The fence posts are usually set by digging a hole deep enough to contain at least one-third of the fence post, placing a gravel base at the bottom of the hole, then placing the post into the hole and pouring concrete around it. Post holes are usually dug manually with a post-hole digger, or with a mechanical augur, but if you're digging through rock, concrete or extremely hard ground, a jackhammer is a better option.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the location of the post holes on the ground with spray paint.

    • 2

Place the tip of the jackhammer on the ground in the center of the hole and lean the jackhammer back towards you at a slight angle.

    • 3

Press down firmly on the jackhammer and squeeze the trigger to activate it.

    • 4

Guide the jackhammer into the ground and underneath the soil or concrete until you lift up a chunk. Release the trigger of the jackhammer.

    • 5

Remove the loosened chunks of soil and concrete.

    • 6

Move the tip of the jackhammer to the next part of the surface that needs to be cleared.

    • 7

Repeat this process until all holes have been dug.
