When building a fence, it is essential that you set the fence posts so that they are firmly in the ground to prevent the fence from falling over or being blown over during a storm. The fence posts are usually set by digging a hole deep enough to contain at least one-third of the fence post, placing a gravel base at the bottom of the hole, then placing the post into the hole and pouring concrete around it. Post holes are usually dug manually with a post-hole digger, or with a mechanical augur, but if you're digging through rock, concrete or extremely hard ground, a jackhammer is a better option.
