DIY: How to Make Chain-Link Gates

If you do not wish to buy a pre-assembled chain link gate but would rather have a custom gate, you will need to make it. Building a chain link gate is comparable to building a fence, but a fence puller is not needed. Fit the frame of the gate together and attach the mesh by sliding tension bars into tension bands. You need basic carpentry skills to make a chain link gate.

Things You'll Need

  • Tension bands
  • Top rail
  • Side rails
  • Bottom rail
  • Chain link mesh
  • Pliers
  • Tie wires

Instructions

    • 1

Glide the tension bands onto the pieces of tubing that make up the frame of the gate according to the manufacturer's directions. Typically, there are three tension bands for each tension bar. Assemble the gate frame by sliding the pieces of tubing together with your hands.

    • 2

Slide a tension bar into the chain link mesh through the end loops.

    • 3

Attach the tension bands to the tension bar on one side of the rail. Slide a second tension bar into the mesh. Make sure you slide it close enough to the opposite side rail to hold the mesh taut once you attach it to the tension bands.

    • 4

Unhook the strand of mesh that's near the outside of the second tension bar and pull it out, removing the excess mesh with pliers. Completing this step attaches the tension bar to the frame of the gate.

    • 5

Pull the mesh and the second tension band tightly while slipping the tension bar into the tension bands on the frame of the gate with pliers. Unhook the tension bar and slip it into the next set of loops if the mesh isn't tight enough. Unravel the excess mesh and hook the bar back into the tension bands. Completing this step attaches the second tension bar to the frame of the gate.

Attach tie wires to the top and bottom rails once you have the chain link mesh firmly in place. Hook the tie wires around the mesh intersections with pliers, pulling on the mesh until it's slightly above the gate frame. Wrap the free end of the tie wire around the mesh with pliers.
