Homemade Twig Garden Fences

Garden fences are an attractive way to define your garden space while keeping out unwanted pests. Instead of putting up an unappealing wire fence, you can make your own. A woven twig fence makes an effective and appealing complement to the natural beauty of the garden. You can use twigs from your own yard, a friend's or a neighbor's. It will save you from having to purchase fencing materials and also help reduce your environmental impact at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut the 1-inch diameter branches into 52-inch lengths using branch cutters. Cut as many as you need so that you will be able to place one every 36 inches along the perimeter of your garden bed.

    • 2

Hammer one 1-inch-diameter, 52-inch-long branch into the ground at each corner of the garden with a rubber mallet. Drive the branches approximately 18 inches deep. Hammer one 52-inch-long branch every 36 inches along the perimeter of the garden bed.

    • 3

Weave the twigs horizontally in an over-and-under pattern between the 1-inch-thick branches. Start the first twig at the bottom of the 1-inch-thick branches and work your way up the branches in rows until you reach the top ends.

    • 4

Trim off the twigs so that they fit along the fence as needed using brush cutters. Tie off the top horizontal twigs to the top ends of the 1-inch diameter branches with garden twine at each intersection to secure the fence together at the top. Cut off the excess twine with shears.
