How to Construct a Barbwire Fence

Barbwire fences are most often found on farms and ranches, providing a deterrent for wandering livestock. When an animal brushes against the barbwire fence a sharp poke is delivered, training the animal to stay away from the fence. These fences are also effective in keeping trespassers off a property because they are difficult and hazardous to climb. If you would like to erect a barbwire fence on your property you can do so without hiring a fence installer.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on leather gloves. Dig several 8-inch wide, 24-inch deep holes to insert the support posts along the line where the barbwire fence will be installed .

    • 2

In a wheelbarrow, mix one part dry cement with four parts sand and mix using a mortar hoe. Spray the cement and sand with a hose and mix again.

    • 3

Set a 4-by-4-inch lumber post into the first hole, centering it up. Pour the concrete mixture into the hole to create a post footer.

    • 4

Mix more concrete as needed, setting posts into each successive hole about 6 feet apart. Allow the concrete to dry for 24 hours.

    • 5

Hold the end of barbwire line against the first post and staple it, straddling the barbwire between the staple barbs. Hold and fasten two to three more barbwire lines to the first post as well.

    • 6

Stretch the barbwire strands to the next post and staple each wire to the post. Continue to staple the wires to each successive post until the property is encircled.
