How to Troubleshoot an SP3 for Zareba

The SP3 is a model of electric fence manufactured by Zareba Systems, a company founded as American FarmWorks in the 1940s but changed its name in 2001. Today, Zareba Systems is one of the largest manufacturers of electric fence systems and animal containment products in North America. Electric fences have been used to control livestock in America as early as the 1930s. Regular care and inspection can help optimize the continued performance of the SP3 electric fence.

Inspect the AC or battery power to the fence controller if the fence fails to electrify. If the fence is using AC power, ensure that the power cord does not have any wear or damage. Replace worn or damaged AC power cords, as they not only impede or prevent performance, but they also pose an electrical fire risk. Consult the manufacturer for warranty information and a replacement cord. If the fence is using battery power, test the condition of the battery with a multimeter. Recharge low batteries regularly to prevent fence failures.

Test the fence wire with a multimeter if it appears to be producing inadequate voltage. An indication of inadequate voltage might be animals ignoring the electrical output upon contact. If the output is less than 5,000 volts, there is a fence controller fault. Consult the manufacturer's service department.

Ensure that no weeds, branches or other debris are touching the fence wires. Debris may impede the electrical current of the fence. Remove the debris from contacting the wire.
