How to Hang Barbwire

Hanging barbed wire, whether for a fence, security, livestock or decoration, should be done with care to prevent injury. The wire is sold rolled up to make installation as easy as unrolling the wire and tacking it in place. Typically, barbed wire is attached to fence posts with staples or by wrapping it around them. Barbed wire may be used in conjunction with other fence styles, such as a woven-wire fence with barbed wire running over the top.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance between fence posts with the measuring tape. If the fence posts are evenly spaced, like every 8 or 12 feet, then you only need to measure one or two intervals and multiply by the number of posts present. Use the measurement to determine how much barbed wire you will need.

    • 2

Start at the bottom of your first fence post, if running barbed wire up the entire fence. If not, start at the lowest point on the fence that the barbed wire will reach.

    • 3

Wrap the end of the barbed wire around the fence post four or five times. Attach one or two staples to help secure it in place. If possible, separate one strand from the wire, wrap it back around the post in the other direction, then loop it around the main strand -- the one that leads to the roll of barbed wire -- five or more times.

    • 4

Hold the handles for the roll of barbed wire and begin unrolling it slowly as you walk away from the first fence post toward the second one. Hold the barbed wire away from your body to avoid scratches, cuts and other injuries.

    • 5

Secure the barbed wire to the next fence post using the staple gun. If the fence posts are round, staple the wire in the center of the post at the desired height for the bottom-most strand of wire. If the fence posts are flat, you can staple the wire in the center or in several places across the post.

    • 6

Unravel another length of barbed wire as you work toward the third fence post. Staple the wire at the same height as the previous posts, then unravel more and continue to the end.

    • 7

Repeat this process for each additional strand of barbed wire. The number of strands running along the fence will depend on your fence needs, budget or other personal factors.

    • 8

Secure the barbed wire at the final fence post the in same way you did for the starting post. Wrap the wire around the post several times, then split the wire and secure it by wrapping it around itself. Staple the wire to the post.
