How to Use PVC for a Riding Ring

A riding ring is a closed-in area like a small field, used to test, train and ride horses. Because polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, fencing materials have high strength, flexibility and a resistance to decay, PVC fencing makes a perfect choice for the fence around a riding ring. PVC fencing installs easily, and does not fade after years in the bright sunlight. It doesn't require painting, and doesn't create splinters that an injure the horse or rider. PVC fencing is available in two-rail, three-rail and four-rail systems for excellent horse protection.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig posts holes for 4-by-4 fence posts. The holes should be in a straight line, 8 feet on center apart from each other and 32 to 36 inches deep.

    • 2

Anchor each 4-by-4 post into the ground with concrete. Put the post into the ground, then pour one bag of concrete into the hole, and mix in a gallon or so of water, according to the cement manufacturer's instructions. Prop the post up with furring strips so it is straight and level while the concrete dries.

    • 3

Remove the furring strip props after the cement dries. Quick dry gravel mix dries in 15 minutes. Standard gravel mix will set in 30 to 45 minutes. Slide the PVC vinyl post covers over the posts. The post covers are prerouted for the fence cross rails. Make sure that the rail holes face toward the next post, and not into the riding circle.

    • 4

Measure the distance between the wood 4-by-4 posts, and cut the fence rails to this distance. This will make the fence rails slightly longer than the distance between the surfaces of the PVC post covers.

    • 5

Install the fence rails by flexing the rail slightly, and inserting the rail into the prerouted slots in the post cover. The rail will spring back into shape, and be long enough to stay inserted into the PVC fence covers. For PVC fencing systems that use flexible PVC strapping as the rails, attach the strap clips to the outside of the fence posts according to manufacturer's instructions, and then slid the strapping through the clips as you wrap the riding ring with the vinyl fence rail.
