How to Replace Fence Cement

Fences are often constructed with one of four materials: wood, vinyl, barbed wire or chain. Though each material is different, the support posts are often anchored in the ground with a cement footer. The cement is actually concrete, a mixture of masonry sand and Portland cement. Over time, the footer may crack due to severe weather, putting substantial pressure on the support posts. When this occurs, the footer can split in two. But this can easily be remedied.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Dig around the fence support post that is leaning or cracked. Excavate the grass, topsoil and dirt until the concrete footer is completely visible.

    • 2

Break up the old concrete with an electric jack hammer and dispose of the pieces.

    • 3

Fill one 5-gallon bucket about one-third of the way with water using a hose and set aside momentarily.

    • 4

Combine 1 part Portland cement with 4 parts masonry sand in another bucket. Attach a paint mixer bit to a drill.

    • 5

Plug in the drill and put it on its lowest setting. Mix the dry ingredients in the bucket, thoroughly blending the thinset mortar and masonry sand.

    • 6

Grab the bucket of water. Pour a small amount of water into the dry ingredient bucket and mix with the drill and paint mixer bit. Add water in small increments, continually mixing until it appears like pancake batter.

    • 7

Pour the cement/sand mixture into the hole around the post, nearly filling it with concrete. Let it dry for 24 hours. Back fill the rest of the hole with the excavated dirt and soil to finish.
