How to Make Tall Snow Walls

Check the weather report before you attempt to make a tall snow wall. You must have a large amount of snow falling with a relatively warm air temperature. Thick, good-packing snow forms best when the outside temperature is about 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Don't attempt to make a snow wall when the temperature is much colder, as the snow won't hold together.

Rinse out empty gallon milk jugs and allow them to drain. Slice off the bottom of each jug with a box cutter or other sharp knife. You will be left with a square-shaped object with a spout and handle sticking up from the top.

Shovel out the area for the floor of your fort. This will sink the floor below the surface of the snow outside it, giving you a head start on the height of the wall.

Pack snow into a milk jug from the bottom end. Turn the milk jug upside down on the ground and lift it off the snow. You will be left with a square block with some snow sticking up on the top where snow tried to enter the spout in the jug. Pat down the top of the snow square to flatten the top surface.

Make snow squares and set them in a double row all around the shoveled area. Pack the squares together tightly to make the wall strong.

Make more snow squares and continue building the walls with them, as if they were bricks in a regular wall. Pack the blocks together tightly every time you add another layer.

Pat a layer of loose snow over the entire wall when you have finished adding blocks. This additional coating will add to the final wall strength and thickness.

Spray the wall with water from the hose and allow it to freeze into a solid coating.
