How to Build a Reinforced Brick Wall

A brick wall can be built to 6 feet or higher to extend around your property, or you can build a short wall of just a foot or two to keep small animals away from your garden. No matter what the height of your brick wall, it should be properly reinforced to ensure it remains stable and solid. To reinforce the brick wall, you will need to create a sturdy base and bury at least one row of bricks below the ground.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a trench in the ground where the brick wall will be installed. The hole needs to be 2 feet wider than the width of the wall and deep enough to accommodate 6 inches of crushed stone, as well as at least one full brick. The brick manufacturer might recommend burying more rows than one, so be sure to check before digging.

    • 2

Add 6 inches of crushed stone to the bottom of the trench and compact it with a hand tamper.

    • 3

Cover the crushed stone with about an inch of stone dust and level it with a rake. Then compact it with the tamper.

    • 4

Set the first row of bricks toward the front of the trench. Make sure the row is perfectly level from all directions.

    • 5

Spread a layer of mortar onto the first row of bricks with a trowel. Start installing the bricks for the second row. On the side of each brick, add a layer of mortar so the bricks are held together at all sides. Don't install one brick on top of another. Instead, stagger the rows of bricks as you install them.

    • 6

Tap each brick into place with the handle of your trowel to ensure that it's stable and secure. Continue adding rows until you reach the desired height for your wall.

    • 7

Fill in the area behind the wall where you dug the trench with additional layers of crushed stone for more reinforcement.
