How to Get an Oversized Fence Approved

Some homeowners are content to have a system of hedges or a small, low fence surrounding their property or yard. However, if you are not happy with one of these options, consider the privacy that can only be offered by an oversized fence. Before installing a large fencing system, you will need to get the fence approved, and this involves getting the appropriate permit from your city government. As long as you have everything in order, this shouldn't be a problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the Permits Department in your county or city. Ask if there are any regulations surrounding fences, such as restricted height or areas where it can be installed.

    • 2

Draw up plans for your oversized fence or ask the fencing contractor to draw up plans for you. These plans need to include how tall the fence will be, the area of your property it will surround and the material from which it will be made. Make sure your plans fit with all local regulations.

    • 3

Get your property surveyed by a professional surveyor. The property survey will prove that you are not installing the oversized fence on anyone's property but your own.

    • 4

Go to the Permits Department and request a fence permit. You will likely be given a form to fill out specifying the details of your project.

    • 5

Turn in the complete form, along with the plans for your oversized fence, property survey and the permit fee. Once your plans are approved, you will receive approval via your permit.
