Will Bamboo Work for a Privacy Fence in My Back Yard?

A privacy fence helps to create a secluded, quiet feel to a back yard. Privacy fences provide a boundary between neighbors, and they also provide a safe environment for kids and dogs to play. Bamboo fences are a good option as a privacy fence as they are durable, inexpensive and attractive.
  1. About Bamboo

    • Bamboo is a grass, not a tree, and grows very quickly. Some people choose to plant bamboo for privacy. Since it grows fast and can be very intrusive, bamboo can easily take over your, or your neighbor's, yard. For that reason, using bamboo panels as a fence can be a better option.

Bamboo is a strong and durable fencing option that can last up to 20 years. It can withstand harsh weather, wind and sun. However, it does need care, and treating it with sealer can extend its life.

    Bamboo Fences

    • Bamboo poles are tied together to form a panel or roll. Rolled bamboo is more flexible and can easily be used to curve around corners. Bamboo fencing can be placed over an existing fence or stand alone. For example, a chain link fence does not provide privacy in a back yard. However, you can purchase 8-foot bamboo panels to attach to the chain link fence for increased privacy. Bamboo panels can also be attached to walls or wood fences. If there is no existing fence, place wooden posts in the ground and attach the bamboo panels to the posts.

    Installation

    • To install a bamboo fence over an existing chain link fence, first place a wood plank on the ground in front of the fence. Bamboo panels should not touch the ground -- they should be installed at least 1 inch above the ground to protect from rot and moisture. They will deteriorate faster if touching the ground. Place the bamboo panels on the plank and then roll panels flush against the fence. Use galvanized wire to tie the panels to the chain link fence on both the top and bottom.

To install bamboo fence where there is no existing fence, mark off sections the length of the panels and place wooden posts at least 18 inches into the ground. Make sure posts are straight and attach bamboo panels.

    Benefits

    • Benefits to using bamboo as a privacy fence include the ability to place it over existing fences that are not high enough and ease of installation. Bamboo fences are natural looking, attractive and functional. They reduce noise and are environmentally friendly. As bamboo is a grass, it grows quicker than trees so it is more easily renewed.

    Appearance

    • Whole bamboo poles provide a more rounded look, while split panels have a smoother appearance. Colors range from lighter natural to a darker mahogany. Bamboo fences work well for back yard themes including Asian, tiki/tropical and rustic.
