Different Welded Wire Fence Designs Around Houses

Welded wire mesh (WWM), or wire cloth, can be a cost-effective barrier in fences. While wire isn't new to fencing, WWM used in fencing is a fairly recent phenomenon. Many coarse WWM designs are intended to reinforce concrete slabs, such as a lightweight mesh rebar. Repurposing concrete and other WWM opens an array of fencing possibilities around houses.
  1. Pressure-Treated Frame wih WWM

    • Most fence designs combine vertical posts with two horizontal members to which vertical fence boards are fastened, as in a picket fence. That design has hundreds of iterations. WWM can be used in place of the fence boards. Rather than fastening it to the inside or outside face of the fence, it is cut to snugly fit in the rectangle defined by the vertical and horizontal members. It is then sandwiched in place by two trim pieces. This doesn't create a privacy fence, but it can restrain pets effectively. It can double as a trellis, too.

    Simple Stakes with Light Mesh

    • Because WWM fences are see-through and often inexpensive, they are often employed as pet fences. WWM is available in a wide variety of gauges and configurations, not just the common concrete reinforcement. Lighter and often shorter WWM can be used in fast-to-assemble dog runs by simply pounding 1/4-inch diameter garden stakes or larger T-posts into the ground, wrapping the perimeter with WWM and fastening with rebar-fastening wire. Placing a cap on the posts prevents them from posing considerable danger if someone falls on one.

    Prefab Panels

    • Fence-specific welded wire panels are available in prefabricated sections. They are manufactured in a way similar to repurposed WWM fences. Because the heavy metal wire is machine-welded instead of custom-made in a fabrication shop, it may provide a very long-lasting, high-quality metal fence without a customized fence's price tag.

Mesh Size, Texture, Design and Finish

    • While structurally most WWM fences follow the post-and-rail design, with the mesh creating the barrier in the field, the designs are at least as varied as the types of WWM that are available. They can be purchased in many heights, mesh sizes, mesh shapes and materials. For example, galvanized material provides a dull gray finish, and stainless steel has a polished metal appearance. Corrosive materials that are allowed to rust offer a down-to-earth, farmhouse ambiance.
