How to Adjust Closing Gate Hinges

Closing gate hinges pull the gate back to a closed position after you open it. This is a convenient feature when you have full hands or are in a hurry. The force with which the gate closes depends on the hinge's adjustments. You can adjust the force in minutes using just a screwdriver. The hinges may require an adjustment periodically to maintain your desired force.

Instructions

Insert a Phillips screwdriver into the hinge's top cover. Turn the cover to loosen it and then remove it from the hinge.

    • 2

Position a flathead screwdriver in the slot located underneath the hinge cap. Push the flathead screwdriver down and turn it either left or right to increase or decrease the hinge's tension.

Open the gate and release it, allowing the closer hinge to pull the gate closed. Make any additional adjustments to the gate hinge, if necessary. Place the hinge cover back over the adjustment screw and use a Phillips screwdriver to tighten it in place.
